The Cordata Business Industrial Park in North Bellingham was originally approved to the master plan by Whatcom County in 1986. A few years later in 1989 the Cordata Business Park Association was formed and the park rules were established. The business park would eventually be annexed into the City of Bellingham, however the association and rules remained intact. The original plan for the park was to create over 13 million square feet of high tech office, light and medium industrial, retail, institutional, residential and recreational uses in a controlled, designed environment. While the total development fell far short of the original goal the overall design was a success. The Port of Bellingham

The Port of Bellingham also owns several marine and industrial buildings that are leased out to private companies. In 2006, the Port of Bellingham purchased 130 acres of Bellingham waterfront. This waterfront purchase has created industrial opportunities today and more for the future. Recently 12 of these valuable acres were sold to Harcourt.
